Canggu
Canggu is the cliché for a reason: warm water, cheap living and a routine that puts surf and yoga around your working day. It's busy and traffic-heavy now, so treat it as a base and escape north or east when you need quiet.

Monthly budget
$1,100–1,900
Best months
April–October (dry season)
Safety
Safe, but scooter accidents are the number one risk
Getting set up
Most nationalities get a 30-day visa on arrival that extends once, and the B211A or the newer remote-worker visas cover longer stays — arrange them through an agent, it's normal here. Villas are rented monthly through local Facebook groups and agents; expect to pay upfront and inspect for damp before committing.
Working from here
Cafés are built for laptops, but Wi-Fi drops in the rainy season — get a local SIM with a generous data plan as backup. Outpost, Tropical Nomad and BWork are the dependable coworking spaces. Bali is UTC+8, which is great for Asia and Australia and painful for the US.
Safety and health
Crime against foreigners is rare; scooters are the danger. Wear a helmet, get an international licence before you arrive, and make sure your insurance actually covers motorbikes — most cheap policies don't. Bali belly is common in the first weeks: bottled water, and clinics like BIMC for anything that lasts.
Making friends
Sunrise surf at Batu Bolong, yoga at The Practice, and run clubs that turn into dinners. Almost nobody here is shy about a first message — say hello on the radar and you'll have plans the same week.
